Grigol Robakidze University has joined the international community of universities that have signed Magna Charta Universitatum 2020. According to the university, by doing so it has once again affirmed its commitment to the principles of academic freedom, university autonomy and responsibility to society.

The official signing ceremony took place on October 16, 2026, at Vilnius University in the Lithuanian capital, Vilnius.

By signing the declaration, the university publicly confirms that its development should be based on shared academic values and their implementation in everyday practice.

For the university, this decision is important in several areas: academic freedom and responsibility, that is, participation in free, argument-based discussion and the development of ideas; institutional autonomy, that is, affirming the importance of independent and responsible decision-making; a student-centered environment that implies respect for diversity, fair approaches and opportunities to participate in university life; international cooperation, that is, deepening dialogue and the exchange of experience between universities; and responsibility to society, which means linking education and research to the needs of society.

The university regards these principles as a guide for the further development of its teaching, research, management and international relations. Participation in the community of signatories, in turn, creates an additional space for sharing experience and cooperation based on values.

Magna Charta Universitatum is an international declaration that defines the fundamental values and responsibilities of universities. It was first signed in 1988, in connection with the 900th anniversary of the University of Bologna. The updated 2020 version retains the original principles and reflects the broader public responsibility of modern universities.

The declaration is based on academic freedom, institutional autonomy, the unity of teaching and research, free thinking and open dialogue. It also emphasizes inclusiveness, equal opportunities and the responsibility of universities for the well-being of society and sustainable development.
