Gorduladze: 150 Parties Banned in Europe in Recent Decades, 22 in Ukraine, 8 in Moldova

Archil Gorduladze, chairman of the Legal Affairs Committee of the Parliament of Georgia, says that 150 parties have been banned across Europe over recent decades. According to him, 22 parties were banned in Ukraine in the last 3 years, and 8 in Moldova. Gorduladze stated that four of these successor parties had their activities banned in July 2026.
Gorduladze claims that the agentura existing in the form of the "National Movement" and the forces behind them are deceiving society: as if banning unconstitutional, non-state parties in Ukraine and Moldova, as well as in Europe, is a celebration of democracy, while banning similar parties in Georgia represents a democratic regression.
According to him, this once again confirms that what is acceptable in Ukraine and Moldova is presented as democratic progress, while the same action in Georgia is assessed as a regression of democracy.
"Society deserves that the activities of unconstitutional parties be banned in Georgia on the one hand, while on the other hand, it is the right of democracy to protect itself and, most importantly, it is the obligation of the government that parties and, in reality, the agentura formed in various forms, which are in violation of the constitution, be assessed legally, prosecuted and banned. What is acceptable in European countries, what is acceptable in Ukraine and Moldova, is presented as democratic progress, while a similar action in Georgia, that is, the banning of unconstitutional parties, is introduced as a form of democratic regression. It is exactly from the same playbook as the Russian law: France is apparently able to adopt a transparency law, the European Union recommends adopting a transparency law, while in Georgia the adoption of the same law undermines democracy. Society sees everything very clearly and is once again convinced that the legislation adopted in Georgia and the steps we have taken fully comply with European standards and, most importantly, stem from state interests and are aimed at ensuring the peaceful future of our country," said Archil Gorduladze.
