Bishop Giorgi Jamdelians of Marneuli and Hujabi published a post on social media regarding digital currency. In his assessment, digital money contains a threat to human privacy and restriction of financial independence.

According to the bishop, technology should serve the human being, and not the human being technology.

In the post he writes: "As became known to me, the Parliament of Georgia considered and approved in first reading the issue of introducing digital currency on an expedited basis.

Issues related to the future of the country are being considered in Parliament on an expedited basis and the opinion of the people is not being adequately heard, which raises serious questions. No technological innovation should be introduced without informing society and without open, broad discussion.

For me, as a clergyman, any system that contains a threat to human privacy, restriction of financial independence and cancellation of his free choice is unacceptable.

It is the duty of the state and the church, of society, to protect human freedom, preserve the possibility of using cash, and not allow technological progress to be placed above human dignity.

Technology should serve the human being, and not the human being technology.

Human freedom is a right given by God and not a privilege granted by the state" – writes Bishop Giorgi Jamdelians.

Parliament approved in first reading the granting of the right to issue digital lari to the National Bank. The amendment gives the National Bank the right, and not the obligation, to issue digital lari.
