Mirzoyan: Serious Debate on EU Membership in Armenia Only Started Now

According to Armenian Foreign Minister Ararat Mirzoyan, serious discussions on EU membership in the country have only just begun. He said that no in-depth public debate was held on this issue, even though the law on the process of joining the European Union was adopted in the spring of 2024.
"I am not sure that the EU has decided to accept Armenia as a full member tomorrow, even if Armenia says yes," Mirzoyan said.
In the context of relations with the EU, the minister also mentioned Russia, saying that Armenia has historically had close ties with the Russian Federation.
"Historically, we were very close to each other, and today we still have very strong ties, but we must manage the possible reaction properly. I mean that no one wants new enemies to emerge in the world. No one intends to harm anyone, any third party," Mirzoyan said.
According to him, at this stage Armenia, the EU and its member states are all benefiting from the relations existing between Armenia and the EU.
"Let us continue these warm relations, open new opportunities, and in the future, at some stage, consider together whether we will get married or not," said the head of the Armenian foreign ministry.
