Pope Leo has been diagnosed with lung cancer after surgeons removed part of his right lung. Reuters writes about this, citing a Vatican medical bulletin.

According to the bulletin, the Pope has lung adenocarcinoma. Analysis of tissue taken during the operation confirmed the diagnosis that doctors had suspected based on preliminary examinations.

The 71-year-old Pope was taken to the Gemelli hospital in Rome yesterday. A growth had to be removed, which was discovered on his lung during a routine medical check-up.

The Pope's chief surgeon, Dr. Stefano Margaritora, and his personal physician, Dr. Luigi Carbone, said the operation lasted about 90 minutes and was carried out successfully, without complications.

According to the bulletin, after the operation the Pope regained consciousness and was moved to a hospital room.
