United National Movement: European Commission report shows de facto halt of European integration

The United National Movement states that the European Commission's enlargement report published clearly shows that the authoritarian rule of "Georgian Dream" and the collapse of the legal system in the country have led to a de facto halt of Georgia's EU accession process.
According to the statement, the actions of "Georgian Dream" contradict Article 78 of the Constitution of Georgia and constitute a proven betrayal of the interests of the absolute majority of the Georgian people.
According to the opposition party, failure to implement the recommendations contained in the eighth report under the visa suspension mechanism puts visa-free travel to the EU at risk. The statement notes that Georgia is among the visa-free countries whose citizens most often apply for asylum in the EU.
The National Movement writes that the basis of visa-free travel is the principles of democratic governance and the rule of law, which, in its words, "Georgian Dream" has undermined through the repression of political parties, civil society, free media and academic institutions, as well as the politically motivated imprisonment of politicians and activists. The party believes that the country has become Russia's "backyard" and that Russian special services may use it to gain access to the EU.
The statement says that, according to the report, the visa dialogue held on 11 June 2026 with representatives of the Georgian government did not bring progress on the issues that cause concern to the Commission.
The United National Movement also draws attention to the concern expressed in the report: courts are used for repressive measures against protesters, while allegations of excessive use of force, torture and ill-treatment during protest actions remain uninvestigated. According to the report, Georgia has a high rate of imprisonment, and pre-trial detention is used excessively and unjustifiably in politically motivated arrests.
The party states that it continues the fight against the corrupt, authoritarian rule of "Georgian Dream" and is confident that Georgia will regain its sovereignty and return to the path of democratic development.
