Sharashidze: Constitutional Court Is Turning Into 'Theater of the Absurd', Zurabishvili Should Use Common Sense

Georgian Dream-independent party Gakharia for Georgia deputy Giorgi Sharashidze assessed the Constitutional Court hearing on the lawsuit to ban political parties. According to him, the main motivation is to show the public the absurdity of the lawsuit.

"Our main motivation is to show people the absurdity of the lawsuit. By watching this process, more people see what we are really dealing with. In any case, we want to prove our truth, that is our main goal," Sharashidze said.

On the "360 Degrees" program on Palitranius, he said that the ongoing process at the Constitutional Court is really a "theater of the absurd".

"The fact that Georgian Dream is what it is does not mean that we should become like that. This is exactly what is being shown today, the lustration of Georgian Dream is taking place through this process. Of course, it must be said unequivocally that this is not only a matter of banning parties, this is a much more dangerous and damaging process. This is a process in which any dissenting opinion in this country will be declared unconstitutional, that is, banned. Georgian Dream says that any opinion different from mine is banned in this country. This means that people's participation in political processes is limited and they move into a regime of self-censorship. The fear of brutal power and radical government is meant to suppress and stifle the whole society. This means that the main, fundamental principle of democracy, that government must change democratically, through elections, is being crossed out... It really is a theater of the absurd," Sharashidze said.

Sharashidze also responded to the statement of Salome Zurabishvili, the fifth president of Georgia, who accused Gakharia's party of colluding with Georgian Dream. Sharashidze urges Zurabishvili to use common sense and "correct her focus".

"I want to appeal to Ms. Salome, at the very least, to correct her focus. We have always been reasonable and moderate in our relations with her. In general, we respected the institution of the president, etc. If anyone has information, it is our team, and for obvious reasons, let us put a full stop here. Salome Zurabishvili should use some common sense, and I would not like to talk about what goals her statement serves at this particular moment, in this situation, and also not remind that Georgian Dream has come to this point today, that this absurdity at the Constitutional Court is perhaps also a result of the irresponsible provocation of October 4, in which Salome Zurabishvili was precisely one of the main participants," Sharashidze said.
