Matikashvili: Vienna Convention Prohibits Envoys From Interfering in Country's Domestic Affairs

Davit Matikashvili, Chairman of the Parliamentary Committee on Procedural Issues and Rules, commented on the meeting of some opposition figures with ambassadors. Speaking to journalists, he said that the Vienna Convention specifically prohibits interference in the country's internal affairs, and that this must be taken into account by both former and current ambassadors in Georgia.
According to Matikashvili, the meeting with the former French ambassador has happened before. "We have seen a meeting with the former French ambassador before. We saw that he gave a grant to Giorgi Kandelaki for the creation of tourist maps. The public can well imagine how Giorgi Kandelaki, the notorious apologist of the infamous 'Nats' criminal political party, spent money on creating these tourist maps. It seems that even today there is an attempt to hold certain meetings with radicals behind closed doors, in a backroom manner, away from public interest and transparency. Naturally, the Vienna Convention specifically prohibits interference in the country's internal affairs, and all of this must be taken into account by both former and current ambassadors in Georgia," Matikashvili said.
Leaders of some opposition parties met with ambassadors accredited in Georgia. The ambassadors of the United Kingdom, Germany and France took part in the meeting.
