Canada will become the first associate member of the European Union. This is stated in a statement by the Canadian government, published after the EU-Canada summit on October 29-30.

According to the statement, Canadian Prime Minister Mark Carney, President of the European Council Antonio Costa and President of the European Commission Ursula von der Leyen have established the "Alliance for the Future". It is a new partnership that will effectively use the strategic capabilities of Canada, the European Union and other countries with similar values to address common challenges.

"In parallel, Canada and the European Union are working towards as deep a partnership as possible - beyond membership - and Canada will become the first associate member of the European Union. Over the coming months, Canada and the EU will define the substance, scope and framework of this form of membership," the statement says.
