Kopaleishvili: There Is No Basis to Expect a Fair Decision from the Constitutional Court

Maia Kopaleishvili, a member of the "Coalition for Change" and a former judge, said there is no basis to believe that the Constitutional Court will make a fair decision in line with the constitution in the case on banning political parties. She made the statement after a session of the Constitutional Court, where the lawsuit of Georgian Dream on banning political parties is being considered.
According to Kopaleishvili, in other cases important for the country that the Constitutional Court has considered, it has made decisions in favor of Georgian Dream. Therefore, she believes that the plenum of judges will also satisfy the ruling team's lawsuit in the case of banning parties.
"Although everyone may want the Constitutional Court to make an objective and fair decision, and although there is no legal basis to satisfy this constitutional lawsuit, of course we do not expect that the Constitutional Court will ignore the demand of the constitutional lawsuit because somehow previous proceedings of the Constitutional Court and decisions made in other cases, which were no less important for the interests of the country, we know ended in favor of Georgian Dream every time.
In this case, Georgian Dream has such an obvious interest in banning political parties, and Ivanishvili announced this during the pre-election campaign and even said that political parties would be banned after the elections, that there is no basis at all to believe that the Constitutional Court will make a fair decision in line with the constitution, since none of these political parties has committed any action contrary to the constitution," said Maia Kopaleishvili.
