The Donald Trump administration is halting the visa-free travel program for Chinese citizens. The program allowed travel to the US island territory. The information is being distributed by Fox News.

The decision was made after Republican lawmakers warned the government that the program could facilitate so-called "birth tourism" and create risks related to national security.

The decision by Homeland Security Secretary Markwayne Mullin concerns the program activated under the Joe Biden administration. It allowed Chinese citizens to visit the Northern Mariana Islands without a visa for up to 14 days.

In an official statement, the US Department of Homeland Security pointed to risks: the program could facilitate "birth tourism," espionage and illegal crossings to the neighboring island of Guam. Guam is an important center for US military forces.

The suspension will take effect on October 30 and will apply to new applicants as well as travelers whose applications have already been approved. Those already on the territory will be able to complete the remaining period of their authorized stay, but will need a visa for future visits.
