According to authorities, the unrest began on Saturday, in the second half of the day, in the area around Catalonia Square. Groups of young people looted shops, damaged street infrastructure and clashed with police. Protesters threw stones and other heavy objects at police officers. Several groups erected barricades, set fire to trash bins and smashed shop windows.

The protest was spreading on social networks under the slogan "Instituts Indignats" (Indignant Students). Its aim was to bring the French youth movement "Lycéens Indignés" to the Catalan capital.

According to Spanish media, approximately 600 people took part in the most active phase of the demonstration.
